Who Makes My Bubbly and How?

With so many bubblies out
there from Cava (Spain), Champagne (France), Prosecco (Italy), Sekt (Germany)
and Crémant (Luxembourg & parts of France), it’s really hard to tell who
makes what bubbly and how!
The
Grand Duchy de Luxembourg makes “Crémant de Luxembourg” under the national mark
(Appellation d’Origin Protégée, AOP), Moselle
Luxembourgeoise. The small European country of Luxembourg with
barely six hundred thousand inhabitants possess the most amazing geographical landscape
ideal for grape & Wine cultivation.
Crémant (pronounced “Crémont”
with a silent “t”) means creamy. The production of
Crémant de Luxembourg began after many decades of wine cultivation and
production in 1991. Crémant is typically made from three grapes, Pinot Noir,
Pinot Meunier and Chadonnay. However, in the past thirty years, Luxembourg has
expanded its grape cultivation to allow other variety of grapes in its
production process. Elements of mother nature, Earth, Wind, Water, and human
interferences all play a crucial role on the quality of the grape harvest.
The use of Luxembourgian,
hand-picked and undamaged grapes are some requirements by which Crémant is produced
using the “Methode Traditionalle”. The age of the wine, the quantity of grape
juice or “must” extracted from pressing whole grapes, the storage requirement
and the quantity of Suger and Sulphur Dioxide are all fixed criteria’s in the
traditional method of Crémant production.
Allthestuffwelove got the
opportunity to guide a group of residents and tourist on a walk through one of several
Vineyards scattered along the South-east of Luxembourg; the Fels. Organized in conjunction with the
tour, came a visit to the cellars of one of the oldest Winery in the Country.
Here we got first hand demonstration of facts discussed in the Vineyard. The
day was complete with a tasting session of a flute of Brut, Chardonnay and
Demi-sec!
