68. Drauwen-a-WäiFest Gréiwemaacher Lëtzebuergesch 2017
68. Grapes and Wine Festival Grevenmacher Luxembourg 2017
68. Fête du Raisin et du Vin
68. Trauban-und WeinFest
It
is the 68th anniversary of a traditional festival held in the
Village of Grevenmacher on the Moselle region of Luxembourg. A vibrant 3-day
event/ set of programme where Luxembourgerish wine growers promote their wine
and Crémant to both the local and international audience.
The
festival in September wakes up the quaint village of 4 thousand plus
inhabitants, located on the Moselle River to a flurry of activities. These
includes the crowning of a wine queen to represent in the country officially
for the year of her reign; food and drinks stalls, music, concerts and a
firework parade! It is certainly one of the most lavish event I have witnessed
in the country.
As
a local inhabitant, it’s the season where I hear the whizzing of the little
trucks zipping through rows and rows of vineyard, collecting handpicked grapes.
It’s also the season where the air around my home is thick with the richness of
fermenting grapes (“ëmù” means Nigerian local brewed Palm wine in Yoruba, it’s
a nostalgic smell). It is certainly a season for “reaping what you sow” for
growers.
Being
a runner and having such vast terrain of forests and vineyards around my home
in which to run, is an incredible blessing. Interacting with nature should not
be taken for granted, it is indeed fascinating to watch “dead” stalks of vine
come alive again and bear fruits!
The
white grapes appear as a traditional Luxembourgish Auxerrois grape also
commonly grown in Alsace and Germany; a full sibling of Chardonnay. Rarely seen
Dark grapes, are a delight to behold.
